Changing etiquettte and mindsets for a wireless age.

The etiquette that represents this wireless age is certainly different from that of fifteen years ago, before the rise of the cell phone as the icon of a mature, mobile adult. Society has, in a way, modified existing etiquette or even possibly created a new one based on what is necessary for the wireless age. If anything, there are more requirements for what is termed "good social etiquette" when cell phone use is brought into question. However, with the technology now available to send and receive calls from nearly anywhere, cell phones are changing how people react to other people.

Years ago, after society had become acquainted with telephones, a new 'mindset' became more defined than anything else: the thought of "instant gratification." Society, which had the technology that allowed instant communication with the outside world, raised their expectations of speedy service and satisfaction. Similarly, with the current widespread use of the cell phone, society is once again expecting events to happen at a moment's notice. Because it is now possible for people to call each other on a whim, a thought, many cell phone users do so without regard, even more so than traditional telephone users. And consequently, social etiquette becomes less of an affair than it has in the past. Thus, this 'new etiquette' is one based on the changing mindset, and is seemingly split into three parts: general etiquette, telephone etiquette, and cell phone etiquette.
