April 12, 2006: FDA Information Regarding Cell Phone UseBelieve it or not, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has gotten into the cell phone informational game. You can find their Questions and Answers about Wireless Phones" website here. There's a lot of great information available at this site. While we don't know exactly how related cell phones are to food and/or drugs, the FDA states officially on the site that "the scientific data do not demonstrate that wireless phones are harmful." In addition, regarding cell phone use by children, the FDA also takes a similar stand - there has been no proof of cell phone usage causing any type of danger in children or teenagers. They also cited a move in the United Kingdom to distribute leaflets discouraging use of cell phones by children - although they also admitted that no conclusive evidence has been found. However, since we do not know the specific long-term (a generation's time) effects of cell phone usage, I believe the British recommendation to keep cell phones away from the younger group is a good one. And seriously, does your child need a cell phone?
The FDA also found that (and this has been echoed by me earlier) so-called "radiation shields" were useless and did not work as advertised. Meanwhile, the FTC charged two companies that sold these shields ("Stock Value 1, Inc" and "Comstar Communications" with several complaints as these companies claimed that their products were scientifically tested and proven. Which, of course, was not the case.
