April 14, 2006: Sprint Unveils Plans to Roll Out 3G Upgrade

Sprint recently announced plans to expand their current high-speed network, which currently reaches about half the country's mobile broadband users.

The plan revolves around upgrading current technology to EV-DO Revision A - according to Sprint, mobile broadband speeds could increase up to 10 times faster. Today, their high-speed broadband is about as fast as typical DSL. By the completion of the upgrade Sprint also hopes to cover about 220 million people within its network.

However, Sprint's competitors aren't standing still. Verizon Wireless, which reaches about 150 million people with their current network, also plans an EV-DO Revision A upgrade. In addition, Cingular Wireless also plans to expand broadband access to more metropolitan areas.

EV-DO stands for Evolution-Data Optimized and is the standard for high-speed wireless broadband technologies in many countries. Currently, EV-DO Revision A is deployed in Japan and Korea, and Sprint's announcement marks the first real 3G push into the United States.
