3G: The Next Generation Network

(2001) What lies ahead for the future of mobile telecommunications (at least in the U.S.A.)? 3G. Aka Third-Generation (Network). A company known as DoCoMo has fairly recently hit upon the idea of a wireless network that supports web browsing, internet games, and movie viewing; best of all, claims the company, 3G will be ultra-fast compared to today's fairly slow-poke network. Customers will have access to many features already available to computer/internet users.

However, while all these ideas look good on paper, nearly all aspects of the 3G network still have to be tested. It's unclear as to when cell phone users will see the 3G technology actually running, although estimates range from this year to several years from now. Since DoCoMo is the only company with the knowledge of how to make this idea work, every cellular phone-related company is watching, and waiting. Even if it takes more than a few years for this idea to be realized, it will change the mobile telecommunications industry forever.

3G has now been in place for several years now - while only prevalent in Japan and Korea, 3G is slowly gaining ground. Sprint + Nextel have announced plans to bring 3G to the U.S.A., but as with most new technology, 3G will most likely require several more years before Americans can pay for a Pepsi or a Hershey bar with their cell phone.
